Changing the World is Overwhelming. Start Where You Are, and Smile More!

We’re on the second week of the study I’m facilitating on “Half the Church,” and I’m loving the discussions we’re been having. I’ve been so blessed by the insights the women in my community have, and the stories they share.

However, this has been a crazy week for me with deadlines, workshops, and the crud taking over our house. Becuase of that, my presentation was rather scattered, and I feel like I ended the study on a negative note. (I didn’t mean to end on the teaching about the sheep and the goats–honest!!!) But, thanks to the wonders of the internet, I can share the video I meant to end with! (I’ll try to show it early next week for the folks who don’t have internet.)

So. God wants us to engage with the world and address the problems out there, but even thinking about it can be overwhelming sometimes. Here’s my friend Allison’s take on the problem. It’s ten minutes–long for a web video–but her insights are well worth it. (Addition–as per Tim’s comment, the story about how she managed to feed/rock four babies at the same time is TOTALLY worth the price of admission. Allison is my hero!)

Love the story on obedience with the two babies in her arms and the crying boy on the floor! I also really liked her insights on feeling overwhelmed and starting with just addressing the opportunities that are already around us. Some people may end up serving in poor communities and developing countries like my son and daughter do, or right in their own home towns as my wife does for young moms who at times are feeling overwhelmed themselves.

Her closing line was golden: “It doesn’t have to be just us trying to go change the world, but learning to be obedient.”

Thanks so much for sharing this conversation with us, JR.

P.S. Whose kitchen was that, and why is it so clean!

Weren’t Allison’s stories fabulous?! That particular story was priceless–and I thought I have it hard with four kids!

I shot the video in my kitchen–and it was somewhat clean because, well, I was shooting a video. :-D (Notice I didn’t shoot a video of my laundry room, which my dirty dishes had been removed to!)

“my laundry room, which my dirty dishes had been removed to”

Well, you could have put your dirty clothes in the dishwasher and then been able to shoot the video in the laundry room.

Ha! Only my laundry room is a lot bigger than my dishwasher, and trust me–the dirty clothes wouldn’t have fit!!! (Heck, the DISHES didn’t!)
